Building a Ghostwriting Business
What is a ghostwriter?
A ghostwriter is someone who is paid to write articles, ad copy, surveys, etc. for someone else. Their name is not published on the writing anywhere. Once the project is complete and paid for, it becomes the sole property of the customer. The customer gets full credit for the piece and retains all rights to the work. If you are looking to start a ghostwriting business and you are a skilled writer or proofreader this would be a perfect niche for you.
Do you have the crucial skills?
You will need to have certain strengths if you plan on becoming a ghostwriter. You must possess excellent reading, writing, proofreading, communication, and grammar skills. You must also have strong research skills, as more times than not, you will be writing about topics that you have no prior knowledge of. To keep the customers returning, you must provide quality work.
What equipment will be needed?
To fulfill the work load, you must have a computer with a word processing application, for example Microsoft Word. There are many applications to choose from on the market. To keep in contact with your customers on a regular basis you will also need an internet connection and a fax machine. Finally, you should invest in a quality dictionary and thesaurus.
Where to you begin?
The first thing you should do is build a website. You can use a site builder program or hire a programmer to build it. You will need to first get a domain name and find a web host. The website must clearly define your objective, what you provide for services, your rates, etc. What is your unique selling point that will attract your clients?
Once your website is complete, do not expect that you will be flooded with customers. You first have to build a customer base, as you would if you had a brick and mortar business. Research your competition and determine what will set you apart from them and make your future customers decide to buy your services. There is a huge demand for skilled ghostwriters in the internet marketing arena, define what makes you stand out from the rest.
There are many freelance sites that offer buyers to post their project and in turn, allows freelance workers to bid on the project. Elance is one such site, and has different levels of membership for you to choose from. There are also many online networking groups that allow you to gain name recognition, advertise your business, and build some great relationships. One such group is Mom Masterminds. They are a group of successful women that have already created their own online presence. It is a membership site, but after eighteen months of continued membership, you become a graduate and no longer have to pay a fee to access the site.
Building your business will take time and a lot of effort. Initially, you will have to devote a lot of your day to building relationships and gaining customers. Once you get a customer and complete the work satisfactorily, ask the client to provide a testimonial to add to your website. This will gain confidence from your prospective customers who visit your site. In time, you will be considered a professional in your field and the tide will shift in your favor. Customers will be coming to you, rather than you having to seek them out.
